Murphy's Moussaka

Anders, Hoofdgerecht, 6 personen, Voorbereidingstijd 20 minuten, Bereidingstijd 30 minuten, Wereldkeuken


  • 500 g mince
  • 2 large onions
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes
  • 5 medium potatoes, cooked, (750 g)
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup grated cheese


In a large frying pan over high heat brown the meat and onions in the oil, stirring frequently. Stir in salt and flour, and cook briefly before adding the tomatoes. Heat until the mixture boils and thickens.

Cut the cooked potatoes lenghwise into 5mm slices

To prepare the sauce melt the butter, add the flour and seasonings and cook briefly, stirring constantly. Add half the milk and stir continuously until the sauce thickens. Add the rest of the milk and continue to stir until sauce boils and thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the grated cheese, and the egg.

Spray or butter a shallow oven-proof dish of about 10-12 cup capacity and cover the base with a third of the sliced potatoes. Cover with half the mince, the next third of the potatoes, then the rest of the mince. Cover this with the remaining sliced potatoes. Press down fairly flat. Pour cheese sauce over the top layer of potato and bake at 180C for 20-30 minutes.

Serve alone or with a cooked green vegetable or a crisp salad for a main meal.
